Blueberry Chia Jam – quick, healthy & vegan!
I really love making this recipe, mainly because it is one of those delicious yet unusual jam recipes, but also it can be made in just 10 minutes! This Blueberry Chia Jam recipe has a very low sugar content so it is a healthier jam alternative. It is also a small batch recipe yet you can double up the quantities and it can be frozen to extend it’s shelf life. Keep reading to see how to make this vegan, sweet & simple blueberry chia jam!
How to Make Blueberry Chia Jam
To make this homemade blueberry jam, it is so easy in small batches. The below recipe is for a 250g jar however you can double up if needed! This is perfect for gifting also. The benefits of blueberry jam is that the fruit is high in natural pectin, once you heat it up with sugar, the natural pectin will release and bind with the sugar to form a gel. This is how we achieve the condensed consistency with small amount of sugar.
Chia seeds will absorb the fruit’s moisture & juices making a thick jammy texture in a short amount of time. It is important to squash the blueberries to force out the fruit’s juices. Not to mention, using chia seeds has a multitude of health benefits: they are packed full of protein and a great source of omega-3 fatty acids, calcium, iron, fiber and more. Chia seeds are naturally gluten free and make a great addition in a vegan diet. The word ‘chia’ in ancient Mayan translates to ‘strength’ proving the power of these little seeds!
So overall, we need to heat up the blueberries & sugar to dissolve the sugar and soften the blueberries. Next we squash & burst the berries to release all their juices and decrease the heat before adding the chia seeds. It is important to stir and keep as eye on the mix as it will quickly absorb and reach the jammy consistency. Finally, remove from the heat & decant into a sterilized jar and seal. Leave the jar to cool before storing in the fridge or freezer.
This homemade jam recipe only contains 3 ingredients
- Blueberries (fresh or frozen)
- Chia Seeds
Also experiment with the fruits. I have made strawberry chia jam as well as raspberry chia jam following this same recipe. A mixed berry chia jam is also a delicious alternative. I am keen to try a blackberry version too!
How to make jam without sugar
If you would like to make a no sugar jam or even healthier version, you can swap the sugar out for agave nectar, which is a more nutritious & vegan honey alternative. Also date syrup or paste can be used, also a vegan product which is made from dates so only contains the natural sugar from the fruit. Coconut sugar or maple syrup are also both vegan friendly healthy alternatives.
