DIY Curry Powder
This DIY curry powder is a mixture of spices which can typically be used in westernized Indian curries. It is so simple to make and its great for storing in the cupboard and using as a seasoning for many dishes.
Ingredients in Curry Powder
Curry powder has no strict recipe to it, it generally consists of a similar group of herbs of coriander, cumin, mustard, ginger, black pepper and cardamon and tumeric which brings the yellow! It is commonly adapted and changed. For example, when making your DIY Curry Powder, adjust the spice level as you like. If you prefer more of a kick, increase the chilli or even add in cayenne pepper too.
Furthermore fennel seeds are also commonly an ingredient here. I avoid this as it has a licorice flavour which I’m not a fan of, however add 2tsp to the recipe if you prefer. The list of ingredients contain the quantities in grams as well as tbsp for reference.
As well as bringing the vibrant yellow colour, Turmeric has so many health benefits like anti-inflammatory and boosts immune system.
How to use Curry Powder?
This spice mix is great to have in the cupboard when you want to make a quick curry. Begin to cook off your onions, garlic and whatever other vegetables you are adding. Next add a tsp per person of curry powder mix to the pot. It brings so much flavour and colour to the dish. Add in your liquid to make the sauce – my preferred for curries is coconut milk. Cook down to thicken and voila. I also use this as a seasoning for roasted vegetables like carrot fries!
CURRY POWDER VS GARAM MASALA
The difference between these two spice blends is that Garam Masala is a traditional spice blend coming from Indian and is used in a lot of authentic Indian dishes. It is brown in colour and has a stronger sharp flavour.
However Curry powder was created in the UK as an Indian spice blend to add to dishes to add Indian flavours to their cooking. This is usually yellow from the turmeric and brings a milder and sweet flavour.

DIY Curry Powder
- 3 tbsp Coriander 15g
- 3 tbsp Cumin 18g
- 2 tbsp Turmeric 19g
- 3 tbsp Ginger 16g
- 2 tbsp Mustard 13g
- 1 tbsp Black Pepper 7g
- 1 tbsp Cardamon 6g
- 1 tbsp Chilli 8g
- 1 tbsp Paprika 7g
- Place all the ingredients into a airtight jar
- If using whole seeds instead of ground spices, then grind them all into a fine powder in a pestle and mortar before combining
- Shake well to combine and store in cool place to last indefinitely
