Fajita seasoning is an essential Mexican spice blend, a perfect simple marinade for chicken or steak and seasoning for burritos and tacos. This DIY recipe mix is easy to make and low sodium with no added salt or sugar. Making this fajita seasoning mix better (cheaper & healthier) than store bought! A homemade spice mix means you can be sure it is natural and gluten free and vegan as well as allowing you to control the spice level yourself.
Uses for Fajita Spice Mix
I always have a jar made up of this spice mix sitting in the cupboard, it is great as a season for any Mexican dishes like tacos, burritos and fajitas. Mix with a tsp of tomato puree and use as a marinade for chicken, steak and shrimp. If making homemade fries, a teaspoon of this mix sprinkled over gives a great flavour!
Ingredients in the Fajita Seasoning
Chilli Powder or if you have chilli flakes on hand you can use this. Paprika, i like to use smoked paprika for a deeper flavour. I love using cumin for seasoning like this, it adds a rich, warm taste which isn’t overwhelming. We have a split of cumin seeds and ground cumin here, the seeds add a crunch in texture which if toasted releases a stronger flavour, however if you don’t have both just add 1 extra tsp of ground cumin. Next is garlic powder a strong flavouring agent. The final staple of fajita seasoning is oregano, I love the flavour of oregano it brings a strong aromatic taste which compliments the spice.
You will notice this recipe doesn’t contain any salt, I don’t believe it is needed. Also most probably there will be salt added to the dish at some other point so I like to keep this as a low-sodium recipe. However if you feel you prefer to add it in, I suggest to add 1/4 tsp. The same goes for sugar, this is a sugar-free recipe as I really don’t believe it is necessary.
