How to make Oat Milk

If you have seen our post about foods that are cheaper to make than buy, then you will know that as long as you have a blender, oat milk is roughly 2400% cheaper to make then buying. So not only are you avoiding unnecessary salt and sugar content but can make your own milk cheaper than store bought. You can of course add sweetener to this recipe depending on your preference and even get creative with flavours by making chocolate or fruit milk.

The process to make Oat Milk

Oat milk is literally the combination of rolled oats and water, 1:4 ratio. You can experiment with 1:3 ratio to have a slightly thicker consistency too.

It is quite common when making oat milk to run into issues of slime formation, due to the phytic acid found in oats (read more on this here). However there is a few important steps which can avoid this. Using iced water when blending, the oats react to heat so they need to be kept cold during the process.

Secondly, using rolled oats straight away helps. I’ve tried recipes where they advise to soak the oats but they came out much slimier when I did this. Plus it’s faster without!

Furthermore, over-blending can cause slimness due to the fact oats act as an absorbent so blending for too long they will begin to absorb the moisture. A good 20 to 30 seconds on high blitz will do the job.

Finally to add to this point, it is important when straining the oats from the liquid to not squeeze or handle the oats too much.

One point to note is that you will notice that the oat milk separates, this is a normal reaction so just make sure you shake before using.

Keep in a sealed container and well refrigerated and it will last you around 5 days.

Uses for Oat Milk

Oat milk can be used as a milk replacement so the list could be endless. On top of just drinking on it’s own, oat milk is great to use with cereals, smoothies, granola, baking and cooking as a milk alternative as well as in coffees and hot drinks. See more ideas below. Be sure to keep the oat pulp also to add into smoothies, granola or even into baked goods.

Make it how you like it

This recipe is oat milk in it’s rawest form, without added sweeteners or flavours. It is great to start here as it stays neutral for sweet or savoury use. However there are so many ways to experiment of making this milk more delicious and exactly how you like it…

For Sweetness

Add 2 or 3 medjool dates or 1 tbsp of maple syrup or honey (if vegan not required) or add 2 tsp sugar.

For Flavours

Vanilla: Add 2 tsp vanilla extract and a sweetener of your choice.

Fruit: Add 140g (1 cup) of fresh or frozen fruit of your choice. I suggest to try Strawberry or Raspberry, super delish!

Chocolate: add 2 tbsp cocoa powder (ensure it’s vegan) with a sweetener of your choice.

Protein: Add 1 tbsp protein powder to bulk up your protein requirement

Salt: If you want just a bit more flavour to the raw form, add a pinch of salt.

For Consistency

Thicker: Reduce to a 1:3 ratio of oats to water to make a denser liquid

Creamier: add in 40g pre-soaked cashews or macadamia nuts (or a combo or both) to create a creamier milk. If adding nuts, blend them with the water first for about 1 minute to ensure they’re broken down before adding the oats.

Homemade Oat Milk

This recipe on how to make oat milk in under 10 minutes with just 2 ingredients.

Equipment

  • high powered blender
  • nut bag or cheese cloth or tea towel or even a tshirt (just something to sieve!)

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Rolled Oats
  • 4 cups Icy Water
  • see above for sweetner & flavour ideas optional

Instructions

  • If you want to add nuts, blitz these first with the water until disintegrated. Then add in the oats to combine for 20-30 seconds.
  • Combine the oats and the icy water (and any sweetener or flavour too if desired) into a blender and blitz for 20-30 seconds to combine. Be sure not to over-blend (see more info on why above).
  • Place your cheese cloth or nut bag over a bowl and pour the liquid to sieve through. Avoiding squeezing the bag, let it naturally drain and use a teaspoon to encourage final liquid.
  • Repeat the sieving process again to ensure as much pulp is removed.
  • Seal and store in the fridge. It will last around 5 days!
