WHAT IS APEROL SPRITZ?

Originating from Padua, Italy in the 1919, Aperol is a famous semi-sweet, slightly bitter aperitif. This Aperol drink evolved to become the base for Aperol Spritz cocktail, now globally famous, known as Italy’s signature drink.

When in Italy in the Summer, Spritzes are non-negotiable! There is something magical about the combination of this ice-cold sweet, refreshing cocktail and the Italian sun beaming down. Automatically makes me smile.

Now being in cold, wet, locked-down Amsterdam, this feels like a distant memory. I see a glimpse of the sun which made me pour a couple of spritzes and dream of Italy.

RECIPE FOR APEROL SPRITZ

3:2:1 – that’s all you need to remember!

3 parts Prosecco. 2 parts Aperol. 1 parts Soda Water.

It is difficult to know what the best prosecco for aperol spritz is. Since Aperol is the driving flavour, I suggest using a relatively inexpensive brand of prosecco. Substitute for a dry white wine if you prefer. I have even tried using Asti, this is a sweeter sparkling white wine.

Campari v Aperol

Campari and Aperol are both Italian alcoholic liqueurs and considered bitters. Otherwise known as an apéritif. When distinguishing Campari, it’s a deep dark red colour whereas Aperol is a vibrant orange colouration. To taste, Aperol is the sweeter, perhaps more delectable of the two, with herbal, orange undertones. Campari is unapologetically bitter, with a spicy and slightly sweet taste.

Depending on your preference, Campari is a popular substitute in a Spritz cocktail. Yet is most commonly found in a Negroni cocktail.
